How to shoot Trap
Trapshooting is a great way to prepare for upland season... and it's a blast!
The challenge is to break the clay target that will be released at your call. The target will be thrown at a consistent height but at an unknown angle within a 34-degree arc. The bird will rise quickly, level off and then fall roughly 50 yards from the trap house.
Mount your gun to your hold point, then look over the trap house. Make your audible call. See the bird and read its movement before moving the gun. Think about shooting the bottom edge of straightaways, and the leading edge of quartering shots and a foot ahead of hard angles. These leads will depend on your handicap and shot speed. Try to shoot the bird before it starts to fall but make sure to cover the target before you pull the trigger. Keep your head on the stock until after the bird busts.
To ensure proper gun safety do not close the action of your gun until the gun is in a safe position and it is almost your turn to call. Be sure to open the action and remove the empty cartridge right away so that your fellow shooters know your gun is safe!
